Dairis Petrauskis

Bundzinieks, skolas pasniedzējs

Dairis Petrauskis is a 28 year old session drummer and teacher from Riga, Latvia. He started showing interest in music at a very early age. He was born in a musical family where both of the parents were musically educated. His dad used to work as a session keys player but mom sang in a professional choir and taught music to little kids. His tendency to rhythm-ify things first appeared when he was just one year old. He started using lots of different kitchen utensils to create rhythmic patterns.

A few years later, he saw his friend perform a couple of pieces on piano which inspired Dairis to start taking piano lessons. Finding the right teacher was not easy and, when Dairis was 12, his mom suggested trying a different instrument. When he got offered the choice between brass instruments and percussion, he chose percussion straight away. During the time period between the year 2000 and 2007, Dairis was trained as a classical percussionist at Riga 3rd Music School and took part in many different young artist competitions across the country, playing marimba, xylophone, timpani and classical snare drum.

Also, whilst in music school, he took part in Benjamin Britten’s children’s opera “Noah’s Flood”. At the age of 22 he decided to move to England where he started studying at The Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford. Three years later in 2012 the course was completed and Dairis graduated with a First-Class Honours degree in Professional Music Performance. Over the last 16 years, Dairis has gained a lot of experience working with various artists, doing both, live and studio work. A pupil of Stu Roberts and Mike Sturgis, Dairis is in regular demand as a freelance drummer for live acts and recording sessions. He is a versatile, click-friendly drummer, specializing in genres such as Funk, R&B, Soul and Rock.

Selected highlights include the Baltic Beach Party (Liepaja, Latvia), Student Paradise (Riga, Latvia) and The Secret Garden Party in Abbots Ripton, England. TV appearances: “Cīņas klubs” (Fight Club) on LNT with DFE and “Sems” on LTV7 with “Morning After”. He has attended master classes given by: Jojo Mayer, Dave Weckl, Derrick McKenzie and Pete Lockett. Main influences are: Steve Jordan, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, Chris “Daddy” Dave, Tony Royster Jr, Jojo Mayer and Andy Fisenden, just to name a few.
